I´ve just quoted a wise person, Said "Fuck ALL!!" with of course the appropriate glorious sweeping hand movements and gestures, got myself the left over beer from the fridge and sent the tax return off.... Come what may.. I´m way under any limits so I´ll be sure to get something back but the student loans might get a bit screwy.. ....not that they aren´t already with this fucked up system we have here ;-)

Sorry, promice to be more upbeat next time round ..

This is just evil....

Late March in Iceland

The weather here, as you may have already noticed from previous posts, is fairly unpredictable, to say the least. On Friday I had to sit in a waiting room for over four hours for Ragnar.
During that time we had sun, then heavy flaky christmasy sort of snow drifting down and covering everything, that stayed for approx an hour then the sun broke out, all was melted and it became amazingly hot in the waiting room, then alas all windows needed to be swiftly closed because all over a sudden it was very windy with trees bending over followed by sleet and then hail..... when we finally left the dentists it was sunny and nice again....No wonder Icelanders have mental problems given the environment they live in !!

Ahhhhhhh

Ahhhhhh the sound of two weeks worth of stomacky money worry tension being instantly alleviated :-) How often does one encounter bank errors in ones favour?? Went to the bank to beg for an even higher overdraft limit seeing as I have to shell out 150.000 Icelandic krona on Friday for Ragnars teeth to be operated upon. Alas to my great surprice and joy she asked me why seeing as I had loads of money in the student loans account and then she went..ohhhh we kinda forgot to transfer it to you *blush* ;-) So come Friday I can manage to pay for the operation as well as the anasthetic for my son :-D GREAT SIGH OF RELIEF !!

On a more serious note.. When I was a kid all dental care for children was paid for by the state!! Since then taxes have ony gotten higher so why do we now have to pay the full price at the dentists then potter along to the social security institute to get supposedly 75% back... only to find that it isn´t even 75% because you see they pay according to their price list which is somewhat lower than the dentists..???!!???

Blehhh... add that to the discontentment surrounding the University of Iceland planning to implement high enrollement fees and I´m NOT happy!!!

Judging by the amount of taxes we pay we should be able to expect the state to run at least ONE proper university where ones financial backround is of lesser importance so as to increase equality among students!!!

But of course the student loans here are such that one has to have a person to guarantee ones loans, which not everybody has.. then every single penny you manage to earn alongside or during the summer detracts from the "loan" you get, as do social benefits for instance child support and stuff!! You´d think it was this great gift they were handing you not a loan..
Oh and if you don´t managed to pass everything in your first semester you won´t get your student loan at Christmas, because you see they are only paid after each semester.... making the first semester near impossibly to cover by people with responsibilities...and bankrupting those who perhaps fail one of five courses...

Is this supposed to be equality in a country where the enourmity of the taxes is excused by Iceland being a welfare state, where hospitals, education and equality is ensured...?

anime chick

You are a human shadow. If a loved one needs you, you are always right at his or her heels! Your deep social connection with human beings produces your qualities of genuine caring and charisma. However, at times you are naive to the true nature of your loved ones. Remember that humans' gift of free will does not always lead them in wise directions. But your essence of love and friendship represent the other precious gifts of humanity. Overall you are a strikingly valuable and innocent being who has a lot to give.

A certain coolness factor here ;-)

O.k. time to top all in nerdness ;-)

Try to top this one, whilst walking to a party on Saturday I found myself singing the "doom song" to the tune of the "A-Team" ;-)

The party was great fun as was to be expected.. A double birthday featuring Lara Croft and the elfin mistress ;-P Where it was perfectly natural for one gentleman to do a sexy dance involving the removal of some of his clothing to the tune of Pokemon ;-D A sight to be remembered... and all men were required to wear eye makeup .... Apart from that the weekend went mostly into emptying rooms and carrying boxes for dad... Oh and .. lo and behold .. miracles actually do happen.. The kids spent the weekend with their father...... (all sarcasm fully intended)

How scary/sick is this..?

The Bush Administration is being investigated for producing “ready made” television news packages in which actors were paid to pose as journalists, it emerged today. Federal investigators have launched an investigation into whether the adverts were “propaganda”, amid allegations that they were an attempt to “manipulate the press”.

and then

We locked you up in jail for 25 years and you were innocent all along? That’ll be £80,000 please

WHAT do you give someone who’s been proved innocent after spending the best part of their life behind bars, wrongfully convicted of a crime they didn’t commit?
An apology, maybe? Counselling? Champagne? Compensation? Well, if you’re David Blunkett, the Labour Home Secretary, the choice is simple: you give them a big, fat bill for the cost of board and lodgings for the time they spent freeloading at Her Majesty’s Pleasure in British prisons.

Dare I ask what this world is coming to .. I think the latter one beats Zhirinowskis plan to convert Iceland into a great big prison for the western world!!

Love these ;-)

I normally don´t forward these chicken soup for the soul type of stories but this one I really liked ;-)

The following scene took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg and London.

A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess.

"Madam, what is the matter"?, the hostess asked.

"You obviously do not see it then"?, she responded. "You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to someone from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat".

"Be calm please", the hostess replied. "Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see if another place is available".

The Hostess went away and then came back a few minutes later.

"Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same, we still have one place in the first class".

Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued.

"It is not usual for our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class However, given the circumstances, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone sooooo disgusting". She turned to the black guy, and said. "Therefore, Sir,if you would like to, please take your hand luggage because a seat awaits you in the first class".

At the moment, the other passengers who were shocked by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.

Awww happy feel good feeling, desu ne ;-)

A misty March morning in Reykjavík

After the warm spring like weather we enjoyed yesterday we were greeted in a slightly chillier manner today ;-)
People having to abrubtly clear their windscreens before scurrying off to work and the more atypical mist lying like a thick blancket over the streets. The golden glow on Hallgrímskirkja gave some hope though ;-P

.. ..

And now for the morning news... ;-) People can be incredibly stupid sometimes!!

Save on both space and hassle... ;-P

When I came to pick up Ragnar from after school activities this young man was resting in one of the shelves.. I couldn´t pass up a picture opportunity like this one ;-)

Japanese party

On Friday we had one of our infamous "science trips" which tend to involve a short introduction to the company followed by a plentitude of beer and food ;-) This time round we went on a really intresting and informative trip to a civil engieneering firm called Hönnun. Seeing as the place was just accross the street from the Karaoke place i Iceland it was only natural that the whole horde gather there to further indulge in the art of imbibing alchoholic beverages...... Great fun as usual! :D

Took my camera along with me when picking Elena up form Playschool

The weather here has been extremely dreary for the past week or so, loads of wind and rain. But I guess I should just be thankful we´re not having heavy snowstorms..
Whilst taking these picks it struck me how run down this part of Reykjavík is looking, it still has it´s charm but a lot of the houses are in dire need of repair :-/ But then again the lighting probably went a long way towards making everything grey ;-)

a thought

humm just had a thought... computer programming is very much built up on western thoughts and ideas.... would the programming for word processing have been radically different if invented and developed in the far east.. i.e. not basing everything on a small aplhabet but on a large number of symbols...? Instead of a few symbols making up a whole array of meanings... humm wonder ponder...
this one - sero thing is built up on the idea of opposites, two of everything .. that is not always the case in all human societies... yet again in fairytales we get the threes constantly cropping up....

just wondering about the duality that forms the basis of computer programming and that also forms the basis of western thought...

then I started wondering how browsers read the information on oriental web pages and wether there is a form recognition thing inbuilt in it or wether each kanji has a formula that the browser reads and interprets..

ok systems overload ;-) Goodnight

Already one answer in ;-)

actually its not that complicated. the webbrowsers have various character tables which they use to look up the character value of a given numeric code which represents some character. These tables are of variable size but are standardized. Most characters have the same value in all tables but if you are browsing a western site there is no need to load the large table containing all the different kanji so the load a small one, when a character which has an unknown numeric code is found, the page prints a garbled letter. but once you switch to the larger table, then the correct character is shown.

Hoshiiiii mono (losely translated, geeky things I´d like ;-)
